Music is for every child at St. John's, whether it is singing, playing a recorder or class percussion, or learning an instrument - piano, violin, flute, clarinet, saxophone - from one of our visiting, highly-qualified peripatetic teachers.

We have two teachers involved in teaching class music, both of whom are professional musicians passionate about motivating children to participate in making music. We follow the National Curriculum with an aim to teach exciting and effective music lessons.

From class music we move on to our school performances, something at St. John's we are very proud of. Each Christmas we mount a full-scale production of an operetta - The Mikado by the mighty Gilbert and Sullivan, Oliver By Lional Bart (to name but two) - at The Wyllyotts Centre in Potters Bar. These productions, in which every child participates, combine the performing arts - music, dance and drama. A fun and exciting time is had by all, but at no expense to a high standard of performance.

School concerts happen each year and once again involve every class with special items for choir and orchestra. We have performed music as diverse as Beethoven to The Beatles and Mozart to Maori folk songs. Our choir was chosen to sing in a Richard Stilgoe concert at the Royal Festival Hall. A great experience for the children. Yes, a busy and thriving department.
