France being the neighbouring country most visited by the English, has informed our decision to teach all boys and girls French, as soon as they begin their schooling in the Reception Year.
French is a European and International language, used and shared by many people for business as well as pleasure, loved for its romance and beauty, a language of philosophy and literature, through Moliere, Dumas, V. Hugo to mention but a few.
At St. John's, the children are introduced to the fun of learning French by discovering the culture and customs of the country before they become familiar with the basic structure of the language through songs, rhymes, finger games and movements. Very quickly the children learn to communicate fluently moving steadily to the more complex aspects of its grammar.
Through visits to French markets and day trips to the country, pupils are able to practise conversations and discover new customs. Paris is closer to London than either Edinburgh or Dublin so it is worth exploring.
